RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - After a surprise primary election loss, U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor will resign his seat in the House of Representatives months earlier than expected. A Cantor spokesman says the congressman will step down Aug. 18 and ask Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe to call a special election to enable his successor to take office immediately.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The key witness in the corruption trial of Virginia's former governor and his wife says his association with the couple was fraught with bad decisions - but an affair with the first lady was not one of them. Former dietary supplements company chief Jonnie Williams is testifying for the prosecutor under immunity and will back on the stand today.

HENRICO, Va. (AP) - Eight teenagers have been ordered to perform 100 hours of community service for a prank at a Henrico County high school. The students pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of misdemeanor vandalism yesterday.

ALBANY, Ga. (AP) - Attorneys are scheduled to make opening statements today in the criminal trial of three people charged in a deadly salmonella outbreak traced to a southwest Georgia peanut plant five years ago. Nine people died and more than 700 were sickened in the 2009 outbreak. The dead were from Minnesota, Ohio, Virginia, Idaho and North Carolina.
