Bluefield Beavers crowned Class AA State Football Champions

WHEELING, W.Va. (WVNS) - Bluefield High School has been crowned the new Class AA State High School Football Champions.

The 14-0 Beavers defeated the Fairmont Senior Polar Bears Friday, Dec. 1 by a final score of 29-26.

The Beavers jumped out to a 14-6 lead in the 1st Quarter with a 9-yard touchdown run from senior fullback Jason "Truck" Edwards and a 60-yard score from senior running back Mookie Collier.

The Polar Bears outscored Bluefield 20-7 in the 2nd Quarter and took a 26-21 lead in to the locker room at halftime.

"We were down at half time and Coach Simon told us to just stand up for each other and be brothers," said Junior Quarterback Chandler Cooper. "That's what we worked for all year long and I mean Mookie and Truck played hard, our offensive line played hard, and we just really give God all the glory."

Cooper scored the only touchdown of the second half on a 1-yard keeper in the 4th Quarter. Mookie Collier would convert on the two-point conversion. That would be your final, as the Bluefield Beavers win it 29-26.

""Well, I'm sure the Super Six enjoyed this game," said Head Coach Fred Simon. "It was back and forth... You hope to come out on top and we did."

The last time Bluefield won the state football title was in 2009. This year's victory is Bluefield High School football team's 11th state title, and their 4th since 2004.
