9-year-old boy organizes coat drive for the homeless

Beckley, W.Va. (WVNS) - With the weather starting to cool down again, one 9-year-old boy in Raleigh County is making sure everyone will stay warm in the freezing temperatures.

Chance Lipford, a 9-year-old boy from Beckley, organized a coat drive for the homeless.

This is the third year in a row he has put together this drive. This year he partnered up with One Voice in Beckley and has a goal of raising 1,000 coats.

Lipford explained with the winter weather, he's making sure everyone stays warm and healthy. "This is important to me because for one, I want to serve the community and two, I want to serve God and help the homeless," Lipford said.

One Voice in Beckley does a community outreach projects every year and they said this year helping keeping people warm is much needed. "The need is truly great. There are many people who go without coats and minimal clothing, that's not adequate for the cold weather," the Program Director for One Voice, Melonie Terry said.

Lipford added anyone who needs a coat can stop by the House of Worship on South Kanawha Street on Monday, Jan. 15, 2018 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Lipford also arranged for 100 free food bags to be handed out.
