Extreme Cold Layering Is Important When It's Brutal Outside

January 1st, 2018 - Enjoying winter activities can be hard when it's brutally cold outside.

When outside temperatures are in the single digits and teens, frostbite can occur is as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin.

Layering helps maintain your body heat, protecting you from frostbite and hypothermia. You should try to wear clothing made of polyester or wool for your layers.

"One of the things is that we don't want to have too much exposed skin, so we want to make sure we cover all the skin first. Then we start to layer with a base of something other than cotton so it's very breathable," Jim Hanson, Winterplace Ski Trainer and Instructor, said.

Cotton does not trap in heat as well as other fabrics used for base layers. You need to have a base layer, a compression layer and then you can put on your winter coats and vests.
