Why It's Important to Layer Up This Winter

As temperatures continue to drop it's important to layer up.  Experts said a number of things can happen to your body when your skin is exposed to the cold.

According to Ski Patrol at Winterplace, anytime you're exposed to temperatures below 32 degrees, there is a potential for danger, especially if you're not wearing appropriate clothing.

Frostnip, frostbite and hypothermia can put you into the hospital or can be fatal. It's important to wear a hat, heavy socks and layer up.

Ski Patrol Director, Ryan Kelly, said it's important to take breaks and don't stay outside for prolonged periods of time.

"Manage the amount of time that we're outside and we're exposed to the cold and if we're dressed and geared properly than that time can be a few hours, if we're not dressed and geared properly than that can be 10 or 15 minutes, ultimately the colder it gets the more aware we need to be of our surroundings and how long we're outside," Kelly said.

It is also recommended when deciding what to wear out in the cold to keep in mind the materials of your clothing. Stay away from cottons, and lean towards materials like wool, polyester and fleece.
