17-year-old files to run for council member in Wyoming County

OCEANA, W. Va. (WVNS) - One Wyoming County teenager is putting her name on the ballot for an upcoming election. Westside High School student, Myleigh Stewart, officially filed to run for Council Member for the Town of Oceana at just seventeen-years-old.

Stewart said there was nothing political about her decision to run for local office, she simply wanted to make a difference in her community.

"It has always been one of my goals to help people around me and I always wanted to change the world in some type of way, and if I'm elected, it'll be my step to changing at least one person's life," Stewart said.

As a straight-A student who spends most of her time volunteering, Stewart developed a passion for helping others. Stewart said it is this passion that pushed her to file for council member, making her one of the youngest candidates to run for local office in the state. However, Stewart said she is not going to let her age stop her from reaching her goals.

"I think that anybody can do anything they set their mind to no matter how old they are, what race they are, what gender. I don't think that it really matters," Stewart explained.

Crystal Stewart, Myleigh's mother, said she was proud of her daughter's courage to take a chance and try to make a positive change in her community.

"Everybody likes to sit back and have an opinion, but nobody really likes to do anything. She wants to take a proactive role. Young people need to take proactive roles in changing their community. If you wanted something to be made different, then you need to fix it," Stewart said.

Stewart said she hopes part of that role will be making improvements to recreational space around Oceana.

"Improving the parks would be very important and the sidewalks. I think if the sidewalks were improved, I think more people would get out in their community and walk more and interact with others," Stewart said.

The Oceana Municipal Elections will take place June 12, 2018.
