Charleston Catholic vs. Wheeling Central

One game into the 2009 West Virginia Girls State Basketball Tournament and one thing's for certain.

There will be a new Single-A champion.

Charleston Catholic knocked off the defending queens of the hill, Wheeling Central, in a quarterfinal matchup, 45-37.

The Knights jumped out to a 18-15 halftime lead, but the Fighting Irish doubled their scoring output in the third quarter alone.

A three-pointer by Maria Femia expanded Charleston's lead to as many as 13 in the fourth quarter.

Femia finished with 11 points, tied for tops on her team alongside Meg Whelan.

Kara DeSantis led the way for Central with 12 points on 5-13 shooting.

The Lady Knights finish the season with a 10-16 record, while the Irish await the winner of East Hardy and Tucker County.

Huntington vs. Woodrow Wilson
Eight days after dispatching of one of the teams heavily favored to win it all, the Flying Eagles couldn't cast the same magic they used against Parkersburg South.

Second-seeded Huntington High made quick work of Woodrow Wilson in the first Class-AAA game of the Girls State Basketball Tournament.

State Player of the Year Whitney Bays doubled-up the Flying Eagles by herself at the half, and the Lady Highlanders held on for a 59-41 win.

Bays tallied a game-high 25 points, 18 of which came in the first half, and 9 rebounds.

Huntington took their foot off the gas pedal in the second half, after racing out to a 17-4 first quarter lead, and a 32-9 advantage at the break.

Talequia Hamilton chipped in with 15 points and Erin Bailes added 14 for the 22-3 Lady Highlanders.

Woodrow was led by Charlene Diggs, who dropped 19 points.

Huntington now awaits the winner of South Charleston and University.

Coach Bernie Bostick's girls finish the year at 14-11.

Tucker County vs. East Hardy
Give East Hardy credit.

The fiesty Cougars came to play, but second-seeded Tucker County did just enough to prevent an upset.

The Mountain Lions held on for a 49-44 win to advance in the Girls State Tournament, securing a date with Charleston Catholic in the semifinals.

East Hardy raced out to an early first quarter lead before Tucker County stormed back to take a double-digit advantage, and a 29-21 halftime lead.

The Cougs cut the deficit to as little as 4 points late in the fourth quarter, but a three-point-play by Bevin Hall provided the backbreaker for Tucker.

Hall and teammate Lyndsey Nestor led the way for the Lions with 16 points each.

Caroline Bennett chipped in with 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists.

Molly Look paced East Hardy, who finished the season 19-7, with 16 points.

Fayetteville vs. Huntington St. Joe's

It didn't take long for the Fighting Irish to show why they've been top ranked in Class-A throughout the entire season.

Huntington St. Joe's raced out to a 17 point first quarter lead and never looked back, toppling the Pirates from Fayetteville, 91-60.

Dusti Chapman paved the way for the Irish, netting 24 points, while Senior Jill Pulley added 20.

Pulley also recorded 12 rebounds.

The key stat in this one: steals.

Huntington St. Joe's set a new state tournament record with 33 thefts, as Fayetteville committed 40 turnovers in the loss.

Cayla Rhodes had a monster day in defeat.

She racked up 26 points and 22 rebounds, but her Pirates finish the season at 17-7.

Huntington St. Joe's still hasn't lost a game to in-state competition.

They advance to play Parkersburg Catholic, Friday at 1pm.

Robert C. Byrd VS. North Marion
The top-seed in Class-AAA flexed its muscle.

Number one North Marion had all the key statistics that coaches love to see.

29 points off turnovers, 36 points off second-chance opportunities.

The hustle points paid dividends, as the Huskies toppled 8th seeded Robert C. Byrd, 73-49.

Tiffany Nicholson tallied 19 points, and Halley Garrett worked efficiently, dropping 20 points in just 17 minutes of floor time.

With the win, North Marion improves to 24-and-1 on the season, they await the winner of Princeton and Martinsburg.

RCB's Sarah Folio paced her squad with 17 points.

The Eagles wrap the year with a 19-7 mark.

Parkersburg Catholic VS. Pocahontas County
Going by seedings, it was the only upset of the afternoon.

The 2006 Class-A State Champions inched closer to another title tilt, as Parkersburg Catholic used a 3rd quarter rally to motor past Pocahontas County, 47-40.

The Warriors claw to within 3 on a handful of occasions in the second half, but the Crusaders ripped off a 16-to-3 run which put this one out of reach.

Maggie Boelter led the way for Catholic, netting a game-high 16 points.

Kyle Pugh added a dozen, and Courtney Ferguson owned the boards, grabbing 15 rebounds.

Chelsea Gum recorded a double-double in defeat, 12 points and 11 rebounds, for Pocahontas County.

The win sets up an intriguing rematch on Friday between Catholic and Huntington St. Joe's.

The Crusaders came the closest of any team in the Mountain State to dethroning the Lady Irish, coming up just 7 points short in a meeting last Februrary.

St. Joe's has won both meetings, including a 54-33 victory to start the 2008-2009 season.

Lincoln VS. Berkeley Springs
The Lady Cougars are one step closer to a return trip to Class AA State Title Game. A strong second and third quarter performance helped Lincoln pull away from Berkeley Springs, 87-60 in the Class AA quarterfinals. Lincoln outscored the Indians 57 to 31 in the second and third quarters.

Martinsburg VS. Princeton
Martinsburg and Princeton deliver the most exciting game so far in the Girls State Tournament. The Bulldogs outlast the Tigers winning in overtime, 76-67 in the Class AAA Quarterfinals.

Jaqueline Brewer's layup with 1:24 to go in overtime gave Martinsburg the lead for good. Brewer finished with 30 points, 11 of those points came in the overtime period.

Amanda Smith led Princeton with 29 points.

Martinsburg will play North Marion in one of the Class AAA semifinal games at 5:30 on Friday.

Tolsia VS. Sissonville
For the second straight year, Tolsia provided a major scare for a second-seed.

Unfortunately for the Rebels, the final result was the also the same.

A left-handed lay-up by Kaitlin Snyder with two minutes to play provided the game-winner and Sissonville shook-off the upset-minded Rebels, 39-37.

After Snyder's basket, Jenny Curry connected on one-of-two free-throw opportunities to make it a two-point game.

Tolsia had a chance to tie and Karli Purvis sank what would've knotted the game up at 39.

However, her shot didn't get off before the horn.

Snyder finished with a game-high 21 points while Pollinger led the way for the Rebels with 17.

With the win, Sissonville advances to the semifinal round to take on Lincoln.

As for the Rebels, they cap their season with a 16-10 record.

Shady Spring VS. Ravenswoode
Shady Spring's return to the West Virginia Girls State Basketball Tournament was short-lived.

Ravenswood pounced on the Lady Tigers early, opening up a double-digit first quarter lead, and never let up.

The two battled back and forth, and Shady was able to cut the deficit to 5 with a little over one minute to play, but the Red Devils slammed the door shut for a 58-46 victory.

Ashley Prince paved the way for the Devils, coming up just a hair short of a triple-double with 19 points, 12 rebounds, and 8 assists.

Emily Rector and Rebekah Samples also added double-digit scoring efforts for Ravenswood.
