Parts of the Turnpike Become Construction Zones

Your commute on parts of the West Virginia Turnpike might be a little slow going.

Story by Nate Quick

The West Virginia Parkways Authority has emergency construction projects underway in Raleigh County.

The Parkways Authority says on the more travelled stretches of the Turnpike, the pavement has been worn down. This can often be hazardous for drivers.

To fix the problem, road crews are cutting out the worst spots and then filling in the gaps. Jimmy Kirk with the Parkways Authority says the highways really need to be completely resurfaced.

This emergency construction has led to some traffic and long delays in the area. The best solution is to plan for the construction and schedule possible delays into your day.

Crews have been working on Interstate 77 between Flat Top and the 64/77 split for the last couple of days. They were expected to finish up on that stretch Tuesday night. On Wednesday, they will move onto 43 Southbound where they will be working until Friday.

Construction can be expected on local highways through the summer. Crews usually start working at 6 p.m. and continue through the night.
