America’s commitment to civil liberties is worth fighting for.
A great many of us were stunned today when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the suspected terrorists we’ve locked up in Guantanamo Bay should have the same rights as U.S. soldiers accused of crimes.
But even if you disagree with the decision, it’s another example of how deep our commitment to protecting the rights we believe every person was granted by God.
That’s how we have become and remained the light of the world.
But we must remember that the people we are fighting now aren’t concerned about such things. The savages that recently tortured and killed privates Thomas Tucker and Kristian Men-CHA-ka in Iraq didn’t hold any trials. And they certainly didn’t worry about human rights.
It’s good that we tread lightly on the question of civil rights.
But have to make sure that we’re not putting our own in jeopardy by being too concerned about those of the people who are trying to destroy us.
