The girls from the Pride of the Plateau are normally spectators at the state tournament.
Now, for the first time in school history, the girls varsity basketball team has earned a place in the state tournament. As you can imagine, the team is very excited. "It has been exciting year this is probably the best team we've had in a long time. Just reach the state tournament and be the first girls team in history from Oak Hill to go is real exciting," says Junior Jessi Shieler. "This is my senior year and we've had a real good season going out with a bang I'm real excited and I'm just excited we made history going to states this year," adds Senior Nicholle Grant.
Head Coach Jerry Epperly says this accomplishment has been a long time coming. "The girls have played hard they've worked hard they've done what we ask."
Oak Hill is known for sending its boys program to the State Tournament, but this year the boys boys have stepped a side.
Now they will watch the ladies play at the Charleston Civic Center.
The Lady Red Devils say they cherish this opportunity. "I wanted boys to go with us so both Oak Hill teams would go but they lost in their sectionals," says Grant. "We won, so will just pick up what they lacked and show them we can do it just as good as they can."
After winning against Clay County in Regionals and Webster County in Sectionals, the Lady Red Devils have turned their attention to Wyoming East.
The Lady Warriors are one of three teams that have defeated Oak Hill during the regular season.
Jessi Shieler says, "They beat us last time, but that was real early in the season we've improved a lot this year and we just got to go up there and play our best."
Oak Hill Girls basketball is one of three Class Double A teams from Southern West Virginia packing their gym bags for the State Tournament.
Game time is scheduled for one p-m on Thursday's Quarterfinals matchup between Wyoming East and Oak Hill.
The winner will play Friday against either Magnolia or Tolsia.
The Class Double A title game is Saturday at 2:30.
