BECKLEY -- Spykes, small, bright, fruity drinks are the topic of concern for parents and anti-drug organizations. Spykes were recently put on the shelves by Anheuser-Busch and now some want them taken down. They come in flavors like Spicy Mango, Hot Melons, Spicy Lime and Hot Chocolate - flavors some say are geared toward kids.
"They're geared toward students, number one, they taste good, they're easily accessible, and they help you to have a good time, supposedly," said Susan Osborne, a teacher at Shady Spring High School.
Osborne said drinks like Spykes can act as a gateway for kids to try other alcohol and drugs.
Jourdan Aromin, a senior at Woodrow Wilson High School, said he doesn't drink but knows students who do.
He said underage drinking is going to happen with or without these fruity concoctions.
"I don't think most of my peers would go for drinks like that. If they're going to drink alcohol they go for the hard stuff from what I've heard," said Aromin.
He said these drinks may hit even younger than high school. His concern is middle school kids.
Police say what's even more sad is the deadly accidents that can happen as a result of drinking and driving. With prom and graduation season here Beckley Police Cpl. Paul Blume said this is the time of year teens tend to drink and then get behind the wheel.
"That age group tends to think they are invincible, but this does come up usually some type of incident usually happens," said Blume.
Anheuser-Busch said these drinks are in no way geared toward anyone under the legal drinking age.
