CHARLESTON -- The high price of fuel is hitting independent truckers hard and they headed to Charleston Friday to express those frustrations.
"It's to the point of break, or else trucks going to loose everything go back to the banks like the housing market. We don't want that," said Gary Davis of Braxton County, an organizer of the convoy.
He says more than 200 trucks took part in the convoy, which was dubbed the "Hillbilly Express".
"I went from spending $1,500 a week to over $2,400-2,500 a week and you just can't make it. What do you do when you don't have any money. The truck don't roll, you don't haul the freight," said Nathan Short, a truck driver from Braxton County
Most of the trucks can hold about 400 gallons of diesel fuel and with that fuel about $4 dollars a gallon, filling up can be quite expensive.
Organizers say the convoy was a success, but truckers still face an uncertain future, wondering if the high price of fuel will be the end of the road.
Governor Manchin was out of town, but told the group via a conference call that he will ask President Bush to release some of the strategic oil reserves.
