Donorama helps saves lives
By Kate Krivanek
BECKLEY -- Hundreds answer the call to help save lives after the American Red Cross reached a two year low last week. This Donorama is the first of it's kind in Beckley. The Red Cross expected only a hundred people, but say they were overwhelmed by the actual turnout. Within the first two hours, 90 people were lined up at the old K&W Cafeteria at the Crossroads Mall to help the blood deficit.
Scott Hill, Donor Recruitment Representative with the Beckley Donor Center says the need for donors is more severe this year. He says typically donations are down about 20 percent in the summer, but this summer, they're down an additional 25 percent. The Red Cross says their blood banks are down from a 3-day to a 2-day supply. They're in need of every blood type.
If you missed tonights drive you can contact the Beckley Donor Center to set up an appointment or to find the drive nearest you.
Tonight's donors got a free T-shirt, a Concord University season sports pass, coupon for a tour of Lost World Caverns and one free round at Mountain State Miniature Golf. One donor is in the running for a chance to win a pair of tickets to see Charlie Daniels perform at the State Fair.
