City torn over where to put new school.
KENNA -- An ongoing controversy over a proposed elementary school site could come to a head this week in Jackson County.
For the last two years, a piece of property and an elementary school have been creating a rift in the small community of Kenna that keeps on growing.
Back in the fall of 2006, the Jackson County Board of Education bought a piece of land inside the Kenna Ridge Business Park on which to construct a new elementary school.
But some residents have voiced serious concerns about the location.
"I'm against the school being built here. There are business here, we have no control over who works in these businesses, it would be open to the public," said Lyn Landfried.
Others support the proposal and say if these plans don't move forward, kids in Kenna will miss out.
"It may be 20 years before we get another chance at this and I don't want to see us, the kids here need it... And we need it now," said Tim Bailey.
One thing both sides can agree on is that something needs to be done about the current Kenna Elementary. Built back in 1960, the school has become overcrowded and has had problems with flooding in recent years.
Now the county school board plans to hold a meeting to listen to comments and concerns before deciding how to proceed.
The Jackson County School Board meeting will meet Tuesday at 7p.m.at the current Kenna Elementary School.
