WHEELING -- Wheeling Park golfer Marshall Hone has been named the WTRF / Belmont Savings Bank Athlete of the Week.
The junior claimed medalist honors at the state tournament by defeating Hurricane's Aaron Barna in a one-hole playoff.
Hone fired rounds of 75 and 81 over the two-day tournament at Oglebay's Robert Trent Jones Course.
"It's a great accomplishment. I've worked so hard all summer to get to this point. It's just a great feeling. I still don't beleive it," said Hone.
Hone did not make any birdies the entire tournament, and only suffered one double-bogey. And that came at the worst possible time--on the final hole--to let Barna into a playoff. They play the 18th hole again in the playoff, but with better results for Hone.
"He put pressure on me, because I knocked my second shot in the bunker and he was on the green in two," said Hone. "But I knocked it to about six inches and made a tap in par. It was unbelievable and I was so nervous."
Barna three-putted for bogey. But his team (Huricane) won the AAA championship by 16 shots over Park.
Hone is just the second Patriot, joining Mike Ricci Jr. in 1999, to win meadlist honors. Hone is also the first golfer from the Ohio Valley to win AAA medalist since John Marshall's Joe Darmafal in 2004. JM's Carson Schambach was AAA runner-up in 2007 and 2006.
