From making the all-state football team to basketball to playing catcher in the spring. Jeremy Buchanan has made an impact over the last four years for the Patriots...

By Rontina McCann

COAL CITY- -- "All the kids respect him and he is certainly a leader on the field." said Joe Goddard, Independence Baseball Coach.

"I've just always been taught to do the best I can and strive hard for whatever I'm doing." said Jeremy Buchanan, Student Athlete of the Week.

For Jeremy Buck-Cannon that could be school, volunteering or sports. The Independence High School Senior is a Promise Scholarship recipient and will play baseball in college. Jeremy is one of six seniors on the Indy baseball team and he hopes to get baseball season started. There's been several rain delays and cancellations that has kept the team inside.

"There's a lot of ability up here and I think we could go to charleston and possibly win a state championship this year." said Jeremy Buchanan, Student Athlete of the Week.

But Jeremy has already been to Charleston this year. Just last week with the American Red Cross. He was part of a visit to the state legislature.

"We have an ER or remote control emergency response vehicle we had it in the capital and I was driving it around the capitol talking to little kids and driving up to them and sound the siren at them and they'd get really excited and have fun so that was awesome." said Jeremy Buchanan, Student Athlete of the Week.

He says working with the agency he's seen so much and knows it makes an impact.

"There's a lot they do because there are house and apartment fires and floods that they take care of it. If it wasn't for the American Red Cross people would be devastated." said Jeremy Buchanan, Student Athlete of the Week.

Veteran coach Joe Goddard says baseball isn't all this versatile athlete does...

"Has excelled in students and as a player for four years in basketball and football." said Joe Goddard, Independence High School Baseball coach.

Jeremy Buchanan plays to use that Promise Scholarship to attend West Virginia Wesleyan and peruse a career as a physical therapist.
