Flood damage analysis

By Kate Krivanek

Pineville --  Congressman Nick Rahall visited Wyoming County to see flood damage first hand.

Today the town of Pineville invited the Congressman to get a look at what they're up against. Wyoming County delegate, Linda Phillips, took Rahall on a tour of homes damaged by flooding of the Guyandote River.

It's an island in the middle of the river that's disrupting the water flow and sending it up the bank and into peoples' homes. Delegate Phillips says the island is privately owned and they're currently seeking out the owner to assign debris clean up.

Phillips says Congressman Rahall is heading back to Charleston, where he'll work to get in touch with the Army Corps of Engineers, to decide what it's going to take to alleviate flooding.

Delegate Linda Phillips says, "Widen and restore. And that's what we're looking at. And trying to remove the trash that is on the island because that's holding the water back. Maybe doing something along those lines with this area."

Delegate Phillips says dredging the river is a thing of the past, as the Department of Environmental Protection says the method displaces too much marine life.

Delegate Phillips says residents in the area of Sycamore Street are fed up with the re-occuring damage. But they believe Congressman Rahall's attendance today is a sign of hope.
