HINTON -- Deputy T. J. Cochran says all the deputies are sick and cannot afford to pay their medical bills.
Cochran was scheduled to address the Summers County Commission today. But the County Commission was behind schedule and after waiting for nearly an hour Sheriff Edward Dolphin and Deputy Cochran walked out.
Deputy Cochran says the issue is payroll.
He says the deputies received their last pay checks a week late, and they have not been compensated for working overtime hours.
The deputies get a 3- cent raise every year, but they say that's not enough. They are requesting a 2-dollar raise and back pay for overtime.
Cochran says if the deputies do not get their request, they will seek legal aid.
Sheriff Dolphin has been covering the deputies shifts since Friday.
Dolphin says it is exhausting, but he is working 24-hours to make sure every shift is covered.
The Summers County Commission has sent a letter to the Sheriff's Department. In that letter, the commission says it will be conducting an investigation that will include reviewing time sheets and pay roll since November of 2005.
The Division of Labor will be assisting.
Commissioner Jerry Berry says the investigation will take a few weeks and the issue will be resolved.
