CHARLESTON -- Smoking three cigarettes a day may not seem like a lot but the reality of what those cigarettes can do is fatal.
According to a study by the American Heart Association, smoking up to three cigarettes a day increases the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by 65%.
That study also proves grim for those exposed to second hand smoke, they have 20% to 30% higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease compared to those who breathe smoke-free air.
"That's just a really frightening number, and it just goes to show that this is really something you should think about finding ways to quit," said Kevin Pauley, Communications Director for the American Heart Association.
Pauley said the study validates what the American Heart Association has said all along.
"It is scary. I would have thought that cutting back smoking say down to three or something would actually be better for you but apparently it's not," said Craig Hundley of South Charleston.
"Pretty scary, not as scary as the prospects of lung cancer is to most people, but still pretty frightening I'd say," said Emily Dunn of Charleston.
Pauley admitted the study itself may not drastically cut the number of smokers, but he said if just one person quits that could have a domino effect.
"If a person is smoking, then there's second hand smoke, if they quit smoking, then that second hand smoke danger goes away and that means people around them are less susceptible to it as well," Pauley said.
