WHEELING -- Hurricane High School, the two-time defending Class AAA State Champs, leads after the first day of the West Virginia State Golf Tournament at Oglebay's Robert Trent Jones Golf Course.
Leading the way is senior Brian Anania, who made his first career hole-n-one on the par three 7th hole. Anania shot an opening round +1 over par 72, and used a six iron to ace the hole measuring 182 yards.
Bridgeport High School's Mark Pinti is second with a 76. Wheeling Park's Marshall Hone, Hurricane's Aaron Barna and East Fairmont's Jess Farrell are tied for third with 77's.
Tyler Clay of Cabell-Midland, Carl Roncaglione, and Sam Booth of Hurricane are tied for sixth at 78.
Wheeling Park's Shayne Wilson, the AAA regional medalist, is ninth with a 79. Park's Eli Lambi shot an 82, Nathan Clingenpeel carded a 94.
In Class AA, Wyoming East's Evan Muscari is the leader after firing an opening-round 73. Chris Johns of Grafton is second with 79, followed by Zack Gresham of Champmanville and Zack Benson of Lincoln with 80's.
Weirton Madonna, making the school's first-ever state tournament appearance, sits third in the Class A team standings. They're behind Williamstown and Huntington St.Joes.
Madonna's Andrew Gobleck was the low Blue Don with an 83. Austin Pitchok had 88, James McFadden carded a 90, Pat McCune shot a 98.
The final round tees off tomorrow morning at nine.
