LEWISBURG -- Emergency responders have cleared the scene of an early morning tractor trailer accident. The interstate was reopened at around 7:30 p.m. Oct. 19.
At around 6 a.m. Monday the driver of a tractor trailer lost control and went over an embankment near mile marker 170 on Interstate 64 westbound. That is about a mile from the Lewisburg exit.
Dispatchers said the driver was hauling 4,000 gallons of petroleum. Crew members said fuel began leaking from the truck about 6 hours after the accident occured. Additional crews were then called in, along with a hazardous materials clean-up team from Roanoke.
