His death is the third mine fatality in West Virginia this year.

CHARLESTON --  Newtown Energy officials said 53-year-old Charles Dixon of Scarbro was killed in an accident involving a hoist car.

The accident happened at Newtown Energy's Eagle No. 1 mine near Winifrede in Kanawha County at around 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Two other miners, Daniel Ewing and Dave Morgan, were injured in the accident. Their conditions are unavailable.

The office of Miner's Health, Safety and Training is investigating.

Newtown Energy officials said they are working closely with government officials on the investigation into the cause of the accident.

"We are deeply saddened by this loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Dixon's family right now", said Bob Ellis, Newtown Energy's President.

Dixon's death is the third mine fatality in West Virginia this year.
