Officials report medication is donated through pharmaceutical companies.

By Alicia Suka

BECKLEY --  Representatives with West Virginia Rx spent Wednesday, Nov. 4, in Beckley educating people about free prescription drugs.

The program is a statewide charitable mail-order pharmacy for residents who can not afford their medication.

Recipients are uninsured and fall in the federal poverty level.

West Virginia Rx reports there are roughly 400,000 people in the state who are eligible for the program, but only 17,000 people enrolled.

"West Virginia Rx exists to help people stay connected to their brand name medication. We can help with patient assistance programs as well, if their medication is not on formulary. We provide no generics and we will guide them to where the least expensive generic exists," said Brenda Dame, WV Rx executive director.

West Virginia Rx is supported by donated medications from several pharmaceutical manufacturers.
