RENICK -- Two skunks tested positive for rabies in the Renick area.
One was found on the Pocahontas County side of Hillsboro on the week of Nov. 16. The other had interacted with a pair of dogs in Upper Renick on Thursday, Nov. 19.
Both dogs were up to date on their rabies vaccinations. However, a canvass of the area discovered a large number of unvaccinated pets in the neighborhood.
West Virginia requires residents to vaccinate their animals against rabies under state law. Failing to do so can lead to a fines from $10 to $50 per animal or 10 to 60 days in jail.
