Heavy snow leading to dangerous road conditions, power outages.
BECKLEY -- A major winter storm continues to move through the region, leaving heavy snow in most hometowns. Accumulations earlier this morning include around 16 inches in Beckley, 24 inches in Oak Hill, 17 inches in Princeton, 26 inches in Marlinton and 21 inches in Rainelle. Reports of up to and over 20 inches of snow have been common through the rest area as well.
Winter Storm Warnings continue for the entire 59 News viewing area, in effect until early Sunday morning.
Snow will continue to fall today, especially early. StormTracker 59 meteorologists say an additional one to three inches can be expected by this afternoon, before the snow tapers off as the system lifts northeast late this afternoon and evening. Total expected snowfall accumulations for much of the region is expected to be 24+ inches.
The snow has resulted in dangerous road conditions across the region. Emergency crews in every county say roadways are not drivable. All unnecessary travel should be avoided. Most roads are either closed or virtually impassible. Conditions should improve as the day wears on, but motorists will still need to use extreme caution as slick road conditions will still be noted.
Power outages have also been reported across much of the area. Shelters have been set up at the following locations: in Fayette County at the Lewis House and Oak Hill High School; in Greenbrier County at Rhema Christian Church; in Mercer County at the Salvation Army in Princeton; in Raleigh County at the Mine Academy, the Raleigh County Commission on Aging and the Beaver Fire Department; in Summers County at Green Sulphur Springs and Sandstone Fire Department and Elton Church; in Tazewell County at the Richlands Police Department and Rescue 945 in Abbs Valley.
Temperatures will stay fairly steady, only rising to the upper 20s to low 30s for highs this afternoon. And overnight lows will dip into the low to mid 20s, so any slush or moisture left on the roadways will be icy.
Snow showers should be limited to the higher elevations in the east as we move through the overnight hours and during the day Sunday.
