CHARLESTON -- A small, but vocal, group of state workers gathered in the capitol rotunda calling for improved wages, benefits and working conditions.
Jay Miner, of the Bateman Chapter of the West Virginia Public Workers Union, UE Local 170, said the union is asking for a $1,000 cost of living increase.
"There's bigger issues to deal with, but we're having to beg for $1,000 a year," Miner said. "We shouldn't have to do this."
Following the rally in the rotunda, the workers marched to the governor's office, singing along the way. They handed the governor's spokesman a petition with 2,000 signatures asking for a cost of living increase for state workers.
In addition to the cost of living increase, the workers are calling for the implementation of caseload standards in the DHHR. Dawn Knight of the DHHR Chapter of the union said workers a looking for something manageable. "A reasonable caseload. Something that they can handle and the clients won't suffer."
The union has also endorsed a bill in the House of Delegates requiring cost-benefit analysis of any privatization plans saying they present a huge potential for corruption.
