HELEN -- Two local organizations are trying to restore a historic baseball field in Helen.
The Upper Guyandotte Watershed Association has teamed up with the Winding Gulf Restoration Organization (WeGROw) to rebuild the Coalfield’s Baseball Diamond. Currently it’s an open field, but once it held semi-pro baseball games for coal miners as far back as the 1930s.
Randolph Greer, President of WeGROw, says it won’t be the same. In fact, it will be a regulation style baseball field. They also hope to add a picnic area, and eventually a fishing dock. The goal is to make a place that people will enjoy attending, while still keeping a piece of history in tact.
“This will be a wonderful place along the Coal Heritage Trail for people to stop and enjoy learning about history,” said Greer.
They’re hoping to get the money needed for the project through the Pepsi Refresh Project.
Pepsi-Cola decided to forgo airing commercials during the Super Bowl. Instead, they’re putting that money into a monthly giveaway to local organizations.
If you’d like to vote for their project to help them earn the more money you can find the link at the bottom of this page.
