The Green River Rollers was the team of choice a few years ago. But the team disbanded and soon, area-skaters were without a home team. Then, the Beckley Area Derby Dames were formed. The team uses Facebook to recruit new members. Only two months into its existence, the Dames are looking forward to a year filled with practice and camaraderie. The Dames won't have a bout until next April.
The squad practices twice a week at KSI Gym, located in the old Shady Spring Junior High School. Stephanie Only, aka Cupcake Cadaver, is the team's captain and says all skill-levels are welcomed. The Dames aren't just a rag-tag group of skaters. Team members are lawyers, nurses, event coordinators and students. The squad does pay dues in order to practice.
