Virginia Tech appeared destined to prove naysayers wrong.
The No. 11 Hokies opened the Sugar Bowl with two field goals by third-string kicker Justin Myer to take a 6-0 lead.
Michigan responded with Denard Robinson hitting Junior Hemingway with a 45-yard scoring strike that gave the Wolverines their first lead with :49 remaining in the half. UM added a field goal with seconds remaining in the second quarter after Virginia Tech fumbled the kickoff.
In the third, Robinson hit Hemingway again from 18-yards out to take a 17-6 lead. After a Hokie field goal, quarterback Logan Thomas scored from the one-yard line to make the score 17-15. Thomas then converted the two-point conversion when he found Marcus Davis.
The teams traded field goals late in the game to force overtime.
In the extra session, Thomas appeared to complete a touchdown pass capped by a beautiful catch by Danny Coale to put the Hokies up 6. After the review, the pass was incomplete. To make matters worse, Myer missed his 37-yard attempt.
Michigan's Brendan Gibbons connected on his 37-yard try to win the game.
Thomas went 19/28 for 214 yards and one interception. He added a rushing touchdown. Running back David Wilson rushed for 82 yards on the ground and Coale hauled in eight receptions for 118 yards.
The Hokies finish the year 11-3.
