With the one-year anniversary of the creation of the Amber Alert system Friday, some local businesses are working to help promote new and innovative to receive up-to-the-minute alerts about missing children.

Brandi McCume, Manager of U.S. Cellular in Beckley Plaza, says that one of the easiest ways people can stay up to date with Amber Alerts in their area is by signing up for text message notifications.

Signing up to receive these Amber Alerts is as easy as sending a text message containing the word "amber" and the zip code for which they would like to receive alerts to the number 26237.

So, for example, someone who wants to sign up to receive amber alerts for Beckley could open text messaging on their cell phone, create a new message and type 26237 in the "To" or "Recipient" section. Then, all they need to do is type "amber 25801" in the body of the message and hit send.

Anyone who does this should shortly receive a text response confirming enrollment in the service and listing the current areas that phone number is signed up to receive alerts for.

If that all sounds too complicated, people can sign up through http://www.wirelessamberalerts.org.

If that still sounds like too much work, McCume says that anyone who wants to sign up for the alerts can visit any area U.S. Cellular location, where the employees will happily sign them up for the service free of charge.
