PRINCETON -
Princeton Officers found a plethora of weapons when they made the DUI stop.
But the weapon that had officers worried was a hand grenade.
Princeton Police Officers pulled over the driver of this red truck on Thorn and West View Ave for what they thought was a DUI stop. Officers quickly found out this suspect was loaded in an entirely different manner.
"We don't know if it was a live grenade," Captain Chad Bailey Princeton Fire Department said. "If its been tampered with if it was something he tried to make himself we're not really sure."
Officers opened the vehicles door to find a grenade and a plethora of weapons. Captain Bailey said the grenade is called a pineapple grenade and is not as sweet as the name suggests.
"Basically it looks like a little pineapple they call it a pineapple hand grenade and they are made to explode and send trap metal out," Captain Bailey said. "They have a 15 meter blast radius."
With the threat of a violent blast officers took extra precaution to secure the area around the truck
"We are just trying to play it safe right now," Captain Bailey said. "We've blocked off the road, we've shut down the local business a dance studio just because of the kids just trying to keep everyone safe. We have to take it as a real situation."
The West Virginia State Police Bomb Squad arrived on scene to determine the status of the grenade. While they could not determine if it was active or dormant. Captain Bailey, who is no stranger to confiscating dangerous weapons, says the bomb squad will still have to detonate the weapon to ensure it will be gone for good
"We ran into a few over the years what they do is they get them and detonate them with the proper things. They will just detonate it and get rid of it," Captain Bailey said.
