A long time West Virginia State Police leader is stepping down from his post in Greenbrier County.
Troop Commander Captain Jan Cahill started off his retirement Friday with a party among colleagues and family.
Cahill said the departure was bittersweet, "It's always nice to see old friends."
Cahill put 23 years of service into the state police and is leaving a lasting impression on co-workers. "Any high profile criminal investigation you're going to see Jan Cahill's name in there as the lead investigator or a principal partner," said Lieutenant Ed Hensley.
Hensley said Cahill was a man of unquestionable character who showed great leadership throughout the department.
The former captain played a major role in law enforcement for Greenbrier County and the state.
"I think I'm going to write a book about some of those experiences. I've told people that. I've just been keeping notes and journals over the years. There has been a lot of interesting stuff you see," said Cahill.
Cahill will be enjoying retirement with an Alaskan cruise and a cross country motorcycle trip.
Captain Brad Mankins from the state police detachment in Charleston will replace Cahill on January 28, 2012.
