Beckie Smith is a mother of four who is in the early stages of developing a support group for loved ones dealing with an addiction. Her journey is one no mother would want to take.
"He was a good kid, always a good kid, good hearted," is how Beckie Smith describes her son Jamie, who is currently serving time at the Anthony Correctional Center for conspiracy to commit a felony.
Smith has been on a mission ever since her son Jamie got addicted to the prescription medications Oxycontin and Opana to help fight the drug problem.
Since Smith's has been incarcerated she has developed the Facebook group MAPDA, Mothers Against Prescription Drug Abuse. The group as more than 800 followers and Smith said she admits it's new for her too, "I'm taking it one step at a time and one day at a time. I have no idea. I just want my son to have support when he gets home, whether it's here or somewhere else."
Jamie is expected to return home soon, and Smith says no matter what she won't give up the fight, "Never give up on your kids. It's probably going to be a life long battle and I know that's scary. Where it is or not I'm always going to be there for him."
Smith is starting an in person support group, the first will be held Tuesday, February 21st at Stanaford New Beginnings Church at 7 p.m. It's open to anyone who has been affected by drugs and needs support.
