BECKLEY -
A former manager of the Lewisburg branch of First Citizens Bank plead guilty in federal court Thursday, to charges that he fraudulently obtained at least $90,000 during his time as an employee.
John R. Garris, 46, of Beckley, was a financial services manager at First Citizens Bank in Lewisburg from January 2007 until February 2011. According to a press release from U.S. Southern District Attorney Booth Goodwin's office, Garris admitted that from at least January 2008 until February 2011 he began taking money from the bank by creating fraudulent loans in the names of existing bank customers.
Garris also admitted that, during the time in question, he also obtained false advances on loans, and that he would issue cashiers checks which he would then deposit in personal accounts with other banks.
In total, it is estimated that $90,000-$99,175 was stolen from First Citizens. Garris faces up to 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine when sentences on June 4, 2012.
The investigation was conducted by the United States Secret Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Susan Robinson was in charge of prosecution.
