Non-Violent Inmates Help Summit Construction

MT. HOPE -

Some of the people who are repaying debts to society are being put to work at the Summit-Bechtel Boy Scout Reserve in Fayette County.

Captain J.K. Sizemore with the Sheriff's Office says the non-violent offenders sentenced to the Day Report Center are being used on some work crews at the Summit as a way for them to give something positive back to the community.

"Instead of taxpayers paying $48.50 a day to house someone in Southern Regional Jail and their not being able to make any type of contributions," said Sizemore, "the Day Report Center and Community Corrections Program allows people to get out and serve the community, do community service work on a variety of projects."

Captain Sizemore says there are usually anywhere from 60 to 75 people serving alternative jail sentences in the Day Report Program.

The Summit-Bechtel Boy Scout Reserve in Mt. Hope will host the National Boy Scout Jamboree in 2013.
