BECKLEY -
The Obama Administration has proposed an initiative to help train workers with the skills to succeed in modern industry. It's called "A Blueprint to Train Two Million Workers for High-Demand Industries through a Community College to Career Fund."
U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) met with New River Community and Technical College president, Dr. Ted Spring, on Thursday, Feb. 16 to discuss the $8 billion initiative.
"West Virginia's community colleges stand ready to do what it takes to get people back to work," said Sen. Rockefeller. "We are so blessed with astounding community and technical colleges in West Virginia, and New River is a stand out."
Dr. Spring added to the Senator's comments by saying that the money would have a tremendous impact on the ability to train skilled workers for West Virginia.
"Support for community colleges is a very smart investment in the economic future of this country," said Dr. Spring. "I am gratified that President Obama and Sen. Rockefeller have the vision to recognize the valuable role that we play in training American workers."
Sen. Rockefeller vowed to help enact the President's initiative into law. At the same time he also re-enforced his support of the White House's plans to maintain funding for Pell and Carl Perkins Grants that help students afford school and assist community colleges in improving their education programs.
