For the second day in a row Bluefield, West Virginia is the site of labor issues. On Thursday, Feb. 16 it was the layoff of 22 non-clinical workers at Bluefield Regional Medical Center. On Friday it was an informational picket by workers at Frontier Communications.
Several members of the Communication Workers of America Local 2276 were set up on Bland Street in Bluefield to raise awareness that they had been working without a contract since an extension had expired in October 2011.
Leaders at the Frontier Communications corporate office tell 59News that a meeting was held in Charleston last week where union leadership was give a "high level proposal" with a "full and final" offer. According to officials with Frontier Communications, the proposed pay package included a compounded pay increase of 15 to 22 percent over 3 years. They said the settlement with Local 2276 was a"significantly greater proposed wage package than anywhere else in country."
Those who were picketing on Friday said they had not heard about or voted on a proposal but there was a meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 21.
