COAL CITY -

Some Raleigh County high school students are getting credit for positive behaviors, but they got more than a pat on the back.

The Patriot Pride Recognition & Incentive Program drew hundreds of students together for a special assembly at Independence High School.

The program features a points system where kids earn points in five areas: academics, attendance & absences, sign outs, tardiness, and disciplinary referral forms.

The students are awarded prizes that are provided through community support.

Principal Chris Perkins says the goal is to take a bite out of the drop-out rate.

"We looked at our drop-out issue and obviously academic standing and success," said Perkins, "and we felt this was something that could promote the positive things that we want our kids to do."

Around 180 students earned prizes ranging from ball caps to movie tickets.  There was even a mountain bike up for grabs.

In addition to the prizes students were also allowed some down-time to hang out and play some games.

Another prize giveaway is set for May.
