A celebration to honor the National Guard's elevation to the Join Chiefs of Staff brought members of West Virginia's congressional delegation to the Center for National Response on Monday, Feb. 20.
U.S Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.), U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.) were at the facility in Gallagher which is used to train first responders and military personnel on how to respond to and mitigate the impact of disasters. They were there to celebrate the passage of a defense authorization package which name the Chief of the National Guard Bureau to the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
"Our National Guard members stand side by side with their active-duty and reserve counterparts and they deserve and equal voice," said Rockefeller.
Adjutant general of the West Virginia National Guard, Maj. Gen. James Hoyer and retired adjutant general Allen Tackett were also there for the event. They joined with Sen. Rockefeller to not the Guard's unique role in the United States Armed Services.
"The National Guard also brings capabilities and efficiencies to the table that we need in these tough economic times," Rockefeller added. "Members of the National Guard provide a capable, operational and affordable military force at just six percent of the Pentagon's annual budget."
The Center for National Response operates the Memorial Tunnel Training Complex, which was originally a two-lane Interstate highway tunnel.
"We have the best training facilities in the nation, coupled with West Virginia National Guardsmen and women who go above and beyond the call of duty every day in service of their country," said Rockefeller.
