WESTON -
West Virginia
4-H, a nationwide leader in the youth camping industry, encourages camping
volunteers and professionals to register for the National Camping Institute. West
Virginia will host the event for the first time at
the Jackson's Mill campsite near
Weston March 11-15.
The biennial conference brings together national camping
leaders to share ideas, learn from workshops and plan improvements in their
camping programs. Anyone who works with youth in camping and other informal
educational settings like after-school programs, church camps, YMCA and
independent camps will find the event beneficial.
"The best thing about the conference," said Jane Jopling,
WVU Hardy County Extension Agent and conference co-chair, "is that each
participant brings their own unique ideas and everyone ‘talks camp.'"
Workshops covering camp-related topics with a focus on
technology will take place Monday and Wednesday, March 12 and 14. Author, child
therapist and camping advocate Bob Ditter will be the keynote speaker during
Monday's opening session. Off-site tours of the Mountain
State will take place Tuesday.
WVU Extension's 4-H Youth Development program developed the
nation's first state 4-H camping program and Jackson's
Mill is the country's first state 4-H camp.
