Coffee Beans & Books is a fairly new business in Raleigh County, catering to those who love a good cup of joe and a nice book. Lauren Weppler stopped by the shop for this week's Trading Places to learn how to become a barista.
The shop is unique because it's housed in the former Shady Spring Junior High which is now known as the School of Harmony. This laid back relaxed atmosphere is what the shops manager Punkie Richmond said makes those regular customers keep coming back.
Richmond recalls memories of customers who were former students at the junior high school coming in the shop and reconnecting over a cup of coffee, "One couple just delighted in a game of checkers and reminisced."
Richmond taught Weppler how to make some of the signature drinks such as the cookie doodle latte and showed her how the equipment works.
Weppler also learned how use the register and how important the planning of upcoming events is to the book store.
Melanie Hicks is the owner of the coffee shop and said bringing people in for book signings and musical guests' helps to gain more interest in what the shop has to offer.
The next event is March 1st from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday. Admission is free, but tickets are available and must be obtained prior to February 27th to attend the event.
