Led by coal, West Virginia exports reached a record $9 billion in 2011, up more than 39 percent from the previous year.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin said Tuesday that the state exported nearly $5.4 billion worth of coal, up from $2.8 billion in 2010. The second-largest sector was plastics, with more than $1 billion exported in 2011.
Machinery, optical and medical products, and organic chemicals rounded out West Virginia's top five exports last year.
West Virginia's largest export market was Canada, with sales of more than $1.5 billion. Brazil, the Netherlands, India and Italy ranked second through fifth.
Tomblin says West Virginia's exports led the nation in percentage growth last year. Overall, U.S. exports grew 15.8 percent.
