BECKLEY -
The Raleigh County Humane Society is looking to give back to
the community while providing new shelters for peoples' furry friends.
The shelter is currently seeking donations of new or
gently-used doghouses, which will then be given away to area residents who
demonstrate financial need. All sizes and styles of shelter are welcome.
According to a representative with the Humane Society, several
houses have already been given away and several new houses have already been
donated. The shelter hopes to build enough attention to make the doghouse
giveaway an ongoing program.
"Drive anywhere and you can see dogs chained without
shelter," said Humane Society Board Member Nancy Smith. "The community has
supported the Raleigh County Animal Shelter and this is our way of giving back."
State law requires that all dogs, including those kept
outside, always have access to food, water and shelter. Anyone who is
interested in receiving a doghouse from the animal shelter should be able to
demonstrate financial need. The shelter is willing to deliver houses to those
who are elderly, disabled or otherwise not unable to visit the shelter in person.
Unused doghouses can be dropped off at the shelter, at 325
Gray Flats Road in Beckley. Anyone
interested in further information should call (304) 253-8921 or e-mail rcpets@hotmail.com.
