Head Coach Frank Beamer and the Virginia Tech Football team
announced today a fundraiser to support the Wounded Warrior Project,
through the sale of camouflage Virginia Tech hats. Hats will be
sold for $8 each at the University Bookstore on-campus, the Volume Two
Bookstore at University Mall, and the Hokie Stadium Shops in Lane
Stadium. Hats can also be purchased online atwww.bookstore.vt.edu. The Wounded Warrior Project was created to
raise awareness and enlist the public's aid as well as provide direct
programs for the needs of injured service members.
Hats will go on sale April 1 and will remain on sale through September
22, when Virginia Tech battles Bowling Green on Military Appreciation
Day in Lane Stadium. All proceeds will be donated to the Wounded
Warrior Project and the goal is to raise $25,000; the number 25 to
symbolize the jersey number Coach Beamer wore during his playing days
at Virginia Tech.
Coach Beamer has invited Ben Kiernan, through the Wounded Warrior
Project to join the Virginia Tech Football team at spring football
practice March 30. Kiernan was a 1371 Combat Engineer for
the Marines when he was injured on September 16, 2010 in Afghanistan
as part of an ambush during Operation Enduring Freedom. Kiernan
is a graduate of Virginia Tech, receiving a B.A. in Urban Affairs in
2008.
As part of Military Appreciation Day, a check will be presented to the
Wounded Warrior Project. In addition, members of the Virginia
Tech football team will wear a special commemorative helmet to show
their support for this project.
