BECKELY -

April 13, marks the 100th anniversary of a devastating fire in Beckley.

The fire destroyed more than 30 Uptown Businesses in 1912.

Chief Billie Trump with the Beckley Fire Department said fire safety has come a long way since that massive fire.

"If you look at what happened then And just in January where we had a significant fire. The building that were built in 1912 there were really no regulation or code enforcement. Number of the structures were wood framed, so when the fire started. It easily consumed the building and jumped. It's almost a two block area consumed by fire," Chief Billie Trump with the Beckley Fire Department said.

But Chief Trump said West Virginians have a long way to go with fire safety.

He says West Virginians are 2-times more likely to die in a fatal fire because folks are not taking the necessary fire precautions like having a smoke detector.
