CHARLESTON -

Wyoming County Career and Technical College is one of four schools in the Mountain State to be recognized for its sound environmental practices.

Four schools, including Wyoming CTC were nominated by the West Virginia Department of Education for the U.S. Green Ribbon School Award, which will be announced April 23.

Additionally, the state gave Wyoming CTC a Maple Leaf Award for environmental impact and energy efficiency of the facility. Two other schools were granted the award in other areas, while Hilltop Elementary school in Marshall County received the Black Bear Award for the highest achievement.

"West Virginia schools are making great strides toward creating healthy environments in schools, including some that have become Energy Star schools for their conservation efforts," said state Superintendent of Schools Jorea Marple. "We want to recognize schools that strengthen that work by imbedding sustainability practices into all aspects of school life."

Marple goes on to explain that these schools have also worked to integrate environmentally sustainable practices into their curriculum. The schools have agreed to work to save energy, reduce costs, feature environmentally sustainable learning spaces and foster wellness.

Also nominated for the national Green Ribbon Schools award were Musselman High School in Berkley County and Our Lady of Fatima Parish School in Cabell County. Winners of the award will be honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., on June 4.
