Posted: Updated:

In the much anticipated arrival of the Boy Scouts in 2013 Southern West Virginia is cleaning up and Fayette County is making it happen with demolishing abandoned homes.

There are currently 130 abandoned and dilapidated homes on the list of the Fayette County Commissions to have demolished.

Forty homes so far are in the process of being torn down. Each homeowner is notified to get their property cleaned up before officials come in and decided for it to be removed.

Angela Gerald who is notifying the public the on the remove of these structures, said it really comes down to safety, "more than just the Boy Scouts it is for safety of the neighbors you get abandoned house and kids go in there and play and we don't want anyone to get hurt."

Gerald said they aren't trying to make people cleanup their property they live in the houses in question have been abandoned for years.

An update on the progress being made throughout the county will be given at the May 18th county commission meeting.
