FAYETTEVILLE -

The National Park Service has released details about a body that was found in the New River Gorge on Wednesday, April 18.

According to Park Rangers, a 38-year-old Ohio man was canoeing with friends on a private trip down the New River when he reportedly began complaining of not feeling well.  The man who is not being identified pending the notification of his family later asked his friends to get him an ambulance.  The man was left on the bank of the river while they went to get help.

Emergency responders were unable to find the man, prompting a search by the National Park Service at around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.  That search was called to a halt at 2 a.m. Wednesday morning though officials say his friends continued the search for several more hours. The search by the NPS resumed at 7 a.m. Wednesday and the body was found at around 8:30 a.m. near the Lower Keeney Rapid.

Officials said the death was not a drowning and no autopsy has been ordered.  The body was taken to Tyree Funeral Home.
