About 220 nursing home residents from 25 different facilities are set to compete in West Virginia's 25th annual Geri Olympics.

Teams from as far away as Morgantown and Lewisburg have registered to compete in the geriatric fitness event in South Charleston on Friday.

The senior athletes will compete in a wide variety of Olympic-style athletic events including bowling, basketball and wheelchair races.

The Geri Olympics Program is the longest running active aging program for residents of nursing homes and nursing care facilities in West Virginia.

Officials say the program has helped to increase the physical activity of nursing home residents and promote active living through sports and competition.
