Escaped Inmate from Tidewater Area Not Captured in Bluefield

Posted: Updated:

Reports that an inmate who escaped from the Southampton Regional Jail in Virginia was captured in the Bluefield area appear to be erroneous.

According to the Associated Press, Media outlets reported that Sherman Hix, 47 was hiding in a farm vehicle when deputies found him Sunday morning. South Hampton County Sheriff's Major Gene Drewery said Hix resisted arrest but there were no injuries.

Drewery says Hix escaped Saturday morning after he was let out of his cell to work.  Hix was in custody at the jail for burglary and grand larceny.

Although the dateline for the story was Bluefield, Va., According to the Bluefield, Va. Police Department and the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office, Hix was not picked up in Bluefield.  A call to the Southampton County Sheriff's Department confirms that Southampton County deputies did pick up Hix.
